Rainbow is commissioned by Östgötamusiken on the initiative of former artistic director Christoffer Nobin.
It refers to the colours of the rainbow that adorn the Pride flag, a symbol of the LGBTQ movement.
It was Gilbert Baker who came up with the initiative supported of politician and legal activist Harvey Milk in San Francisco
in the 1970’s and it has today become the inclusive and all-encompassing symbol.
The flag stands for pride and diversity for homosexuals, bisexuals and transgender people, respect for fellow human beings and tolerance.
For each color in the flag contains clear definition in one word and the composer has translated it into pitches based on his synesthesia (colour vision) of six tones which forms the work’s main theme in the form of a ritornello (chorus) that is heard in the first movement which is varied
in different ways in the consequent movements.
Each movement briefly describes what they mean.
