WORRIED SOULS TO BE PREMIERED IN GERMANY WITH FIVE PERFORMANCES


The award-winnning dramatic concerto about ”artists souls in a dystopian society in relation between man and machine” to receive its German premiere in Stralsund, Greifswald and Putbus with five performances with Karin Dornbusch, Philharmonisches Orchester Theater Vorpommern and Golo Berg.

SNOW QUEEN CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED AND SOLD-OUT PERFORMANCES


Snow Queen, a fairytale after H C Andersen, libretto and concept by Anelia Kadieva Jonsson, was both broadcasted live on Swedish Radio P2 and received many positive reviews throughout Swedish press. 13 performances including school performances were practically sold-out and total media coverage one week in advance the opening night. Will announce in the foreseeable future where the future shows will be.

FESTIVAL COMPOSER AT BÅSTAD CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL 2016


During June 27 to July 2 this summer Staern will be this years ”festival composer” during the Båstad Chamber Music Festival. Four works to be performed, two of those are world-premieres: AIR-SPIRAL-LIGHT; concerto for guitar, ensemble and electronics (commissioned by Föreningen Kammarmusik NU),

WILL WRITE FOR THE OPENING YEAR OF MALMÖ LIVE


During the season 15-16 Malmö Symphony Orchestra has commissioned a work for a wind instrument and orchestra, Staern will compose a concertino work for solo horn and orchestra to be premiered at a Saturday matinee on April 30th in Malmö. The soloist is Einar Öhman and already the first drafts has been made. It will be performed as a part of a series of newly written wind concertos at the newly built concert hall Malmö Live, famous for its acoustics and performance!

PERFORMANCES BOTH HERE IN SWEDEN AND ABROAD IS A GREAT START OF THE YEAR 2015.


Polar Vortex (Symphony no. 1)
continues its performances with its next stop in Helsingborg (Febr. 1st) with Stefan Solyom and April 16th in Norrköping with Michael Francis. In between there is an Italian premiere scheduled in Padova of Muramaris for 15 solo strings with Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto with Stefan Solyom and Två själar, en tanke for brass quintet with Stockholm Chamber Brass at Hochschule für Musik und Theater, Rostock and also Jubilate for large orchestra receives also its first US performance with Azusa Pacific University Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Christopher Russell.

POLAR VORTEX A TRIUMPHANT PREMIERE!


Last week
Polar Vortex (Symphony no.1) commissioned by Kungliga Musikaliska Akademien for Gävle, Helsingborg and Norrköping orchestras as a gift to celebrate their centennial anniversary 2012, was premiered by Gävle SO and star conductor Leif Segerstam. After a major success with standing ovations and thunderous applauses, the symphony will be performed across Sweden. The press was also positive with the words ”The music is alive and vivid pulsating” and ”A typical Staern-work, colourful and positive eventful”. FLUXUS THROUGHOUT SCANDINAVIA AND GERMANY THIS LATER SUMMER!


After an intensive Spring, still there are a number of performances worth to write down in one’s schedule. FLUXUS is being performed again with organist Hans Fagius throughout Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Germany. Check the performance list under ”upcoming performances”.

AN OPERA COMMISSION FOR MALMÖ OPERA: SNOW QUEEN - OPERA FOR THE FAMILY IN COLLABORATION WITH LIBRETTIST ANELIA KADIEVA-JONSSON.

Snow Queen by HC Andersen is a fairytale that has produced many times as an animated film, musicals, songs and many more. The topic is about Gerda’s fight against the Snow Queen and to save her brother Kai being enthralled forever. Premiere scheduled to be performed during 2015-16 season at Malmö Opera. A NEW PIECE FOR HAGA DUO TO BE PREMIERED IN VÄSTERÅS AND LATER ON TOUR TO AUSTRALIA

Opposing Dance is a result of commission from National Arts of Council (Statens Kulturråd) for Haga Duo and has commissioned several works by other composers such as Mattias Lysell, Emmy Lindström and Benjamin Staern plus other Australian young composers. This project called Opposite’s Attract and will have its premiere in Sweden and will go on a tour to Australia later this Autumn. More details about the work will come soon.

TRANSTRÖMERSÅNGER RECEIVES DUTCH PREMIERE IN THREE CITIES

Tranströmersånger (ensemble version) was commissioned and dedicated to Carina Vinke, New European Ensemble and Christian Karlsen three years ago and shortly after that the composer was appointed as the ensemble’s first composer-in-residence. The songs was first performed in the Fall of 2010 at festivals in Västerås, Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö, Sweden in highly acclaimed performances. Now this time you can hear it again on a mini-tour arranged by the ensemble.

The first concert in Muziekgebouw, Amsterdam will be broadcasted live on Swedish Radio P2 and Radio 4 Nederlands alongside The EBU. It will be repeated performances at Korzo, Den Haag and at Musis Sacrum, Arnhem with music by Klas Torstensson, Justin Christensen, Silvia Colasanti and Arnold Schönberg.

BENJAMIN STAERN AWARDED THE CHRIST JOHNSON PRIZE FOR WORRIED SOULS.


Staern receives the prize for his work Worried Souls (concerto for clarinet and symphony orchestra), with the motivation "With astonishing ability he handles large musical forms in an original and personal way, in a work characterized by richly varied orchestration and dazzling virtuosity of the solo part."


The award will be handed by HM the King Carl Gustaf at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music's ceremony meeting at Musikaliska, Stockholm on November 26th

WORRIED SOULS WAS VERY WELL RECEIVED BY THE AUDIENCE AND PRESS ALIKE IN NORRKÖPING AND LINKÖPING


Worried Souls was performed twice in Norrköping and Linköping with soloist prize winner Karin Dornbusch and Norrköping Symphony Orchestra with Stefan Solyom conducting. The audience response was very well received with positive reviews by the main newspapers being hailed as ”impressive and stunning”, ”Whips and junk percussion kicks in the imagination” and ”clarinet in suggestive surrondings”. More performances to come shortly and will be posted here.

BELLS AND WAVES WINNER OF THE SMFF AWARD 2011 AS THE BEST  CONTEMPORARY MUSIC WORK OF THE YEAR


Bells and Waves was commissioned by New Ensemble as a part of his residency there and premiéred last year at the White Crow Music Festival in Leiden, Holland and won recently the SMFF Award as ”The most significant contemporary music work of the year” in the category chamber music. The award ceremony was held at Berns salonger in Stockholm on November 11th. Watch Staern’s acceptance speech right here!

Jubilate for symphony orchestra has been selected by the Swedish section of ISCM (International Society of Contemporary Music) as one of twelve contributions prior to the selection round of World Music Days 2012 in Belgium by an international jury.

COMPOSER-IN-RESIDENCE AT NEW EUROPEAN ENSEMBLE

Staern has become a composer-in-residence at the New European Ensemble in The Hague and will span three years starting this September. He will work closely with the ensemble's musicians and music director Christian Karlsen. Staern is working on a new large scale composition for ensemble to be premiered at the White Crow Music Festival Leiden this coming November.

NEW EUROPEAN ENSEMBLE TOURS WITH TRANSTRÖMERSÅNGER


For its first visit to Sweden, the New European Ensemble has commissioned an extended version of the song-cycle Tranströmersånger. The ensemble originally premiered the work at the Schönberg Festival, The Hague in 2009. The world premiere of the new version will take place in Västerås Concert Hall on the 9th of October with subsequent performances in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö.

The performance in Malmö will form part of the Connect Festival.

SUCCESS FOR JUBILATE IN GLASGOW, SCOTLAND


Jubilate, originally commissioned work by the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra received its UK premiere to a sold out concert audience in Glasgow, City Halls. The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra was conducted by the piece’s dedicatee Stefan Solyom. The performance were later broadcasted on BBC Radio 3.

BENJAMIN STAERN RECEIVES SWEDISH GRAMMIS AWARD FOR BEST CLASSICAL ALBUM OF THE YEAR


The album Sonanza Unheard of - Again containing Nattens djupa violoncell perfomed by Swedish star alto Anna Larsson with Sonanza Ensemble was awarded Best Classical Album of the Year 2009 during the Swedish Grammis Gala in Stockholm.
